Mismanagement in Public Healthcare Facilities in India
Public healthcare facilities across India are facing serious challenges due to corruption, administrative inefficiencies, and lack of accountability. Patients frequently report being asked for unofficial payments or bribes to access basic services such as hospital beds, diagnostic tests, medicines, or faster treatment. In many government hospitals, essential medicines and medical equipment are unavailable despite being officially sanctioned, forcing patients to purchase them from private pharmacies at high costs. There are also reports of absentee medical staff, inflated procurement contracts, and misuse of public funds meant for healthcare infrastructure and patient welfare. These issues disproportionately affect economically weaker sections of society, who depend heavily on public hospitals for affordable healthcare. Corruption and poor governance in the healthcare system not only undermine public trust but also put lives at risk by delaying or denying timely medical care. Strict monitoring, transparent procurement systems, grievance redressal mechanisms, and digital tracking of resources are urgently needed to ensure that public healthcare services function fairly, efficiently, and in the best interest of citizens.
