Severe Pollution of the Yamuna River Due to Untreated Waste
The Yamuna River, one of Indiaโs most important rivers and a major source of water for millions of people, is facing severe pollution, especially in urban regions such as Delhi. Large amounts of untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and solid waste are continuously discharged into the river through drains and outlets. The river frequently experiences excessive toxic foam, foul odor, and oxygen depletion, making the water unsafe for human use and harmful to aquatic life. Despite multiple government initiatives and cleanup programs, pollution levels remain critically high due to poor enforcement, inadequate sewage treatment infrastructure, and unchecked industrial discharge. The degradation of the Yamuna not only threatens public health and biodiversity but also affects agriculture, groundwater quality, and religious practices associated with the river. Immediate and coordinated action is required to improve wastewater treatment, regulate industrial waste, and restore the riverโs ecosystem.
