Vyapam Scam
The Vyapam scam refers to a massive admission and recruitment fraud centered on the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), commonly known by its Hindi acronym Vyapam. It involved systematic manipulation of entrance exams for government jobs and professional courses in Madhya Pradesh, India. The case gained national attention for its scale, political implications, and mysterious deaths linked to those connected with the investigation. Vyapam conducted exams for medical admissions, engineering courses, and government jobs. Investigations revealed that officials, politicians, and middlemen conspired to rig these tests. Techniques included impersonation—where hired candidates took exams for others—and manipulation of answer sheets. Bribes determined who received favored placements. The scam operated through a wide network that blurred lines between educational institutions, bureaucrats, and political actors. The scam began unraveling in 2013 when police arrested students using imposters for medical exams. Subsequent probes uncovered thousands of fake admissions and recruitments. As media coverage expanded, numerous accused individuals and witnesses died under suspicious circumstances, fueling public outcry. In 2015, India’s Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure impartiality.
