πŸ“ Short description

Lack of Transparency and Accountability Between the Government and Citizens in India

πŸ“ Problem in brief

Transparency is a fundamental pillar of democracy, enabling citizens to understand how decisions are made, how public funds are used, and how policies impact their lives. In India, despite constitutional guarantees and legal mechanisms such as the Right to Information (RTI) Act, many citizens continue to face challenges in accessing timely, clear, and complete information from government authorities. Delays in responding to information requests, incomplete disclosures, complex bureaucratic processes, and limited proactive data sharing have contributed to a growing transparency gap. In several cases, citizens and civil society organizations report difficulties in obtaining information related to public spending, infrastructure projects, environmental clearances, welfare scheme implementation, and administrative decision-making. This lack of transparency weakens public trust, fuels perceptions of corruption, and reduces citizen participation in governance. When information is inaccessible or unclear, accountability mechanisms become ineffective, and corrective action is delayed. The problem is further compounded by limited digital accessibility, inconsistent data formats, and insufficient awareness among citizens about their information rights. Bridging the transparency gap requires proactive disclosure of government data, stronger implementation of transparency laws, independent oversight institutions, simplified digital access to public information, and meaningful engagement between authorities and citizens. Transparent governance not only improves accountability but also strengthens democracy by empowering citizens to participate in informed decision-making.
